A former Gaston Fire & Rescue Kids Fire Camp participant recently used what he learned at camp to help his sister during a frightening situation.
The child attended Kids Fire Camp around 2022. Years later, he was outside with his sister at a neighbor's house when he noticed that she was not acting like herself. He asked whether she could walk in a straight line. When she could not, he knew something was wrong.
As his sister began to pass out, he caught her and laid her on her side in case she became sick. He continued asking her questions to keep her alert while calling a parent for help.
The family was able to cool his sister down and help her drink water. The parent later contacted Gaston Fire & Rescue to share what happened and thank the Kids Fire Camp instructors.
The parent credited her son's quick thinking and calm response to the instruction he received at camp. She also shared a message of thanks for the people who give their time to teach each group of campers.
Gaston Fire & Rescue is proud of this former camper for recognizing that his sister needed help, remaining calm, and taking action. The department is grateful to the family for sharing their experience and to the instructors who make Kids Fire Camp possible.
Kids Fire Camp gives young people hands-on opportunities to learn about fire safety, first aid, teamwork, and the work of the fire service. Campers build confidence while learning practical skills from Gaston Fire & Rescue volunteers. As this family's story shows, those lessons can stay with a child long after camp is over and make a real difference when someone needs help.
“He knew exactly what to do and did not panic.”
