Gaston Members Continue Heavy Vehicle Rescue Training
Gaston Fire & Rescue members joined firefighters from other area departments on Saturday, August 15, for another day of Technical Rescuer: Heavy Vehicle Rescue training.
The first exercise placed one passenger vehicle beneath the middle of a tractor-trailer and a second vehicle beneath the rear. Crews had to stabilize the trailer and both vehicles before creating access points and completing the simulated extrications.
A second scenario placed a tractor on its side with simulated occupants inside the cab and beneath it. Members practiced stabilization, cab access, lifting, and coordinated removal around the commercial vehicle.
Heavy vehicle crashes can involve high loads, unstable vehicles, and limited access to patients. These exercises gave firefighters time to work through each step with the tools and crews they would rely on during an emergency.
