Gaston Cadets Earn First and Second at NC Junior Technical Rescue Challenge
Gaston Fire & Rescue's cadets earned first and second place in the North Carolina Association of Rescue & EMS Junior Technical Rescue Challenge on Saturday, September 12.
The first-place Red Team included Darren McGee, Darrien McGee, Jaxson Peterson, and Johnnie Mack. Kyler McLean, Isaac Scott, Nicholas Barkley, and Noah Payne competed on the second-place Blue Team.
The challenge tested compass bearing navigation, rapid harness donning, vertical basket attachment, construction of a 1:1 picket anchor system, and wood cribbing using box cribs and crosstie boxes. Cadets also completed a short rappel from a second-story window.
The knot portion covered the Bowline, Figure 8, Figure 8 on a Bight, Sheet Bend, Water Knot, Butterfly, and Double Figure 8. For the mechanical advantage portion, teams built a 4:1 compound system and a 2:1 pulling a 2:1.
Gaston Fire & Rescue congratulates all eight cadets and thanks Cadet Advisor Lieutenant Darrick McGee and Assistant Cadet Advisor Heather McLean for their time spent training, mentoring, and supporting the teams.
